StarSkate
Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition – this is what STARSkate is all about!
STARSkate is Skate Canada’s Figure Skating program following CanSkate.
STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate, artistic and synchronized skating. Unique in Canada, this program is offered in a group and/or private lesson format in a progressive and sequential manner and includes specifically designed awards and incentives. Skaters in the STAR 1-5 and STAR 6-gold programs have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Assessments through a nationally standardized assessment system as well as compete at STAR 1 - 4 Series or Provincial Series for STAR 5 and up.
STAR 1 - 5 is designed to introduce skaters of all ages to the 5 disciplines in figure skating. Skaters will learn the basics for each discipline that will serve as a foundation for continued growth in all areas of figure skating. The disciplines are: Skills, Freeskate, Dance, Artistic and Synchronized skating.
Assessment: Skating skills, Freeskate, Dance, Artistic and Synchro Tests are assessed by the skater’s coach during the regular lesson.
STAR 6 - Gold is designed for skaters who completed the STAR 1-5 Program. This program builds on the skills acquired in STAR 1-5 and introduces skaters to more advanced figure skating elements.
Assessment: STAR 6 Skating skills maybe assessed by the skater’s coach. All other tests are evaluated by a Skate Canada evaluator assigned by Skate Ontario on a scheduled Assessment Day.
Skills
Skills are a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo. The basic components of all disciplines of figure skating are incorporated into the program. The movements are derived from former compulsory figures, free skating and ice dance. The objective of the Skills program is mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating – edge quality, control, power and speed.
Dance
Ice Dance consists of 12 levels of assessments. The Dance assessment program teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison.
The dances in the STARSkate Program can be tried in any order but a candidate must pass the required number of dances in a dance assessment before proceeding to the next level.
FreeSkate
Freeskate consists of the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed in sequence to music.
STAR 2-10 assessments consists of 2 parts – Elements in Isolation and a Free Program with the exception of STAR 1 which is Elements only and Gold which is a Program only.
