Hockey Skills (PowerSkate)

POWERSKATE

Also known as CanPowerSkate

Skate Canada’s nationally recognized instructional power skating program, designed specifically for hockey and ringette players.

Develop skating skills that translate directly to game situations, with a strong focus on:

⛸️ Balance & Control
⚑ Agility & Quickness
πŸ’ͺ Power & Strength
πŸ’ Speed & Acceleration
πŸ”₯ Endurance & Game Skills

Players progress through sequential, skill-based drills led by NCCP-certified coaches, helping athletes become stronger, faster and more confident on the ice.

Build better skating. Improve your game.

Prerequisite

Skaters must have completed CanSkate Stage 4 or an equivalent skating level.

πŸ’ This is NOT a Learn to Skate program.

Skaters must already have basic skating foundations, including the ability to:

  • Skate forwards and backwards

  • Stop safely and on command

  • Maintain balance and control while skating

  • Perform basic turns and transitions

Ready to build speed, agility and power? Hockey Skills is the next step!

Equipment

Skaters must wear:

πŸ’ Hockey skates
🧀 Hockey gloves
πŸ‘ Hockey stick
⛑️ CSA-approved hockey helmet

Full hockey equipment is strongly recommended for added safety and protection during on-ice activities.

Assessments

A PowerSkate assessment evaluates a hockey or ringette player’s skating technique, speed, balance and agility through technical skill demonstrations and timed drills.

WHAT IS ASSESSED?

⛸️ Skill Performance
Edge control, stride extension, turns, transitions and overall skating technique.

⏱️ Timed Drills
Skaters complete designated skating patterns and obstacle drills to measure speed and efficiency.

πŸ† Achievement Levels
Technical execution and skating performance are assessed against established benchmarks, allowing skaters to demonstrate their progress through progressive achievement levels.

πŸ“ˆ Progressive Development
Skaters build from fundamental balance and skating control toward advanced speed, agility and puck-control skills.

The goal: Develop stronger, faster and more efficient skaters who can confidently apply their skills in real-game situations.
